Fire Prevention and Safety Grants - 2010 & 2011

For Fire Departments and Emergency Management
As the 2010 Fire Prevention & Safety Grants begin to roll out, now is a good time to start building relationships with the deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind communities in the areas you serve. The best way to start is by reaching out to your local or state deaf advocacy agencies.  They can advise you on how to make your smoke alarm distribution program truly accessible.  CEPIN can also help you make those connections.  You’d be surprised just how easy it is to ensure these underserved individuals are included in your smoke alarm distribution program.

For Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind Advocacy Organizations
Now is the time to contact your local fire department or fire marshal's office. If they applied for Fire Prevention and Safety grants, they will need your help in reaching out to your constituents. If you're unsure of who your emergency management contacts are, email us at [email protected] .

Upcoming 2011 Fire Prevention & Safety Grants
When the 2011 FP & S Grant Guidance comes out, we expect to see some of the same language when it comes to inclusion of the deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind communities in smoke alarm distribution programs.  This inclusiveness will give your grant submission special consideration by FEMA, just like the 2010 FP&S Grants.

In your 2010 FP & S submissions, many of you chose to make CEPIN the outreach and training component of your distribution programs.  Some of you have already been awarded grants and we look forward to partnering with you and ensuring these underserved populations are not overlooked.  We plan to offer the same sample grant wording as we did last year; this will make it easy to include CEPIN in your grant submission.

Whether you’re anticipating getting a 2010 FP & S grant or just getting an early start in preparation for the 2011 grant season, you can make early progress by identifying ways to provide outreach to the consumers you serve, and how to make your anticipated distribution program truly accessible, so you can hit the ground running when the grants are awarded.
