Training Opportunity on Unique Fire Prevention & Safety Challenges Facing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals

CEPIN and
IPC (Inclusive Preparedness Center) are offering this training opportunity to introduce proven new outreach and planning tools for helping all communities, particularly the deaf and hard of hearing communities, improve their home smoke and fire safety.  The training will explain:
  • The IPC/CEPIN engagement approach to residential fire safety planning and practice
  • How to use the Smoke and Fire Safety Action Planner to support smoke alarm installation, maintenance, and testing
  • Using the Action Planner to support face to face fire safety planning and practicing
  • Using the Instruction Manual to train partner organization staff to do practical outreach and planning with the people the organization serves, including members of the deaf and hard of hearing communities
  • Particular challenges faced by the deaf and hard of hearing communities in home fire safety
  • How collaboration multiplies the effective outreach of Fire Life Safety Educators to the deaf and hard of hearing communities
  • Meeting the communication and accessibility needs of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Alerting methods and smoke alarms available to the deaf and hard of hearing communities

TARGET AUDIENCE:  Fire Life Safety Educators, firefighters, fire marshals, representatives from advocate agencies serving the deaf and hard of hearing, and key leaders from the deaf and hard of hearing community.

COST: Training is provided at no cost to eligible participants.  The materials, supported by a grant from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program - Fire Prevention and Safety Grants, are also free. FEMA Administrators to Keynote at TDI Conference

CEPIN's parent organization, Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. (TDI) is proud to announce that W. Craig Fugate and Marcie Roth will keynote the afternoon portion of TDI's conference on Thursday, June 2nd.  They will be talking about FEMA's commitment to ensuring people with disabilities are included in all steps of the emergency planning and preparedness process.  Administrator Fugate will address the conference via video while Ms. Roth will speak at the conference in person.

Craig Fugate, FEMA Administrator


As Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Fugate has led the agency in responding to numerous disasters including the recent tornado outbreaks in the South.  Administrator Fugate has also completely revamped the way the agency looks at the disability community and is pushing for inclusion into the overall plan rather than creating separate plans or annexes.           Marcie Roth, Director of Disability Integration and Coordination, FEMA

Marcie Roth was appointed by President Obama in June 2009 to be the Senior Advisor on Disability Issues for FEMA. Once at FEMA, she developed the new Office of Disability Integration and Coordination, where she now serves as Director. In this role, she leads the Agency’s commitment to meet the access and functional needs of children and adults with disabilities in emergency and disaster preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. CEPIN Director Neil McDevitt Featured in NFPA Journal

CEPIN's Program Director Neil McDevitt was featured in the July/August 2010 issue of the National Fire Protection Association Journal.  Neil talked about the importance of ensuring the fire protection standards for accessibile smoke alarms are continually updated.
